As I rocked to the beat and felt the words through the base something caught my ear. Christian hip-hop artist Edward Long performed as the opening act for our annual youth explosion at HCT. I couldn’t help but notice that in the midst of the base dropping I heard a word. This wasn’t just any word, I think I just heard a WORD WORD. Did he just say what I think he said? No! I immediately stopped rocking. The beat couldn’t move me anymore. As a young woman, I of all people know that people make mistakes. It’s how we grow not only spiritually but in life. However, as an artist, intentionally cursing in church was completely disrespectful. James 3:1-12 states although we are human and make mistakes we can not worship and curse God with the same tongue. It’s like using the same toothbrush to make your toilet and teeth squeaky clean. We are all examples, therefore we can not bless and curse those we encounter with the same tongue ( Ephesians 4:29). If you feel like a WORD WORD is going to come out of your mouth, STOP! Write it down, think about it, and then consider the toothbrush. Tell me what you think!
